Mountain Campus Research Application Form

The intent of this document is to establish policies, procedures and guidelines for use of the Mountain Campus for research. The document is subject to annual review and approval by the Mountain Campus Research Advisory Committee.

To be considered for research at CSU’s Mountain Campus please complete this form. This application is renewed on a yearly basis. If your research will span multiple seasons, please complete the form each year, even if there is no change (resubmitting the prior form with updated dates is acceptable). The preferred deadline for research applications is April 1st. Researchers needing housing who submit after May 1st will be reviewed on a space available basis. This form will allow us to catalog the research projects and their location and evaluate whether additional permission is needed. It is our goal to comment on applications within 10 business days. DAY TRIP, HOUSING AND DINING REQUIREMENTS

If you wish to rent a conference or student cabin on campus, please list your requested dates and housing preference. If you have any unique dining needs, you can indicate that here as well.

Researcher Housing Costs

We will do our best to accommodate the preferred housing. However, our spaces fill quickly and are on a first come, first serve basis.

Equipment Request

The MTC may have the basic capability to support your project in terms of facilities management related assistance. Please note: MTC staff time to support specific projects may be invoiced. This may include setup of equipment, transportation of equipment, administrative or field support, or clean-up of abandoned equipment/supplies. List above any resources and/or equipment which you plan to need.

Please list the funding sources for your proposed project including funding agency, funding period, and amount. This info is useful when reporting to CSU research administration.(Required)

AESTHETICS, HEALTH, AND SAFETY: If you are planning manipulative research, defined as anything that will alter the natural environment (collecting soils, plants or plant parts, alteration of the microclimate, placement of collection systems), or if you plan to put permanent markers or chemical or isotopic tracers in the field, please fill out the rest of this section. If you have information on equipment you will request to install/use, please include links or pictures with this application. Researchers not doing manipulative research may skip this section. Please note that our site has limited domestic animals (neighbors, people camping close to MTC, ESA/Service Animals on site, etc.)that are required to be leashed and on trail. If you are unsure where you will be working, please contact the MTC Associate Director to discuss possible locations. Some examples might be; South Fork Cache la Poudre River watershed, Cameron Peak or Hourglass Fire burn scar, Homestead Forest, etc.

Colorado State University’s Principles of Community, are required to be honored by every individual, in all areas.
Quiet Hours are 10PM to 7AM.
MTC is a non-smoking campus.
Any visit to MTC for research will be communicated at least 48 hours in advance. This can be done by emailing casey.malsam@colostate.edu.
All visitors to campus must check in upon arrival at the main office upon arrival May-October. This is located in the dining hall in central campus and is open 7 days a week from 7am-7pm. November-April visits can be approved by emailing MTC administrators.
Any vehicle used by people associated with this project must park in the conference parking lot unless explicit permission is granted by MTC administration to park elsewhere. Vehicles must stay on roads unless explicit permission is granted by MTC administration.
The research lab in the basement of the Harbison Building is a shared space. Please tidy the space after each use.
We currently have limited storage space for active research.
1. The research lab has some capacity for in-season storage available for anyone conducting research on site May-October. If you need locked storage, please consult MTC administrators for options. This space must be vacated by the end of each season.
2. The research storage shed is also a shared space and available on a first come basis. This space can be used over winter for ongoing research projects. It is not a climatized space so sensitive equipment would not be appropriate for this space. The storage is limited to approved MTC research and cannot accommodate long term storage. MTC reserves the right to downsize storage if the research is no longer active.
3. Although MTC is not responsible for research time and materials lost due to storage failure or malfunction, we will do everything we can to assist with research recovery and insurance claim information.
4. All material must be clearly labeled with LAB, NAME, DATE and CONTENT. Unlabeled material is subject to disposal.
5. Storage of items outside of the research lab or shed is not permitted without permission of MTC administration. If found, users will be notified with a deadline to remedy, or a cleaning fee will be added to the account.
6. In the best interest of the MTC and its multidisciplinary users, it is imperative that you clean up after yourselves promptly and thoroughly. This includes removing all project supplies, samples, equipment, machinery and infrastructure, if not pre-approved to leave behind. If final clean-up is not completed within a reasonable timeframe (max. of 30 days) of the research stop date and/or departure date the cost associated with this effort will be billed to the project or the department.
If you notice a repair or maintenance need for CSU property, please notify MTC staff immediately, so we can quickly address the concern.
Acknowledgement of the MTC contributions is encouraged in publications that include any data generated at MTC. An example of an appropriate acknowledgement is “The authors wish to thank the Mountain Campus at Colorado State University for facility access and assistance with research”.
The responsible PI will submit a copy of the paper to the MTC Research Advisory Committee for archiving.
